"Seasons in the sun" với nguyên bản là "Le Moribond" ( The Dying man), được sáng tác và công diễn lần đầu tiên bằng tiếng Pháp bởi nhà thơ Jacques Brel năm 1961.

Bài hát là lời từ giã của một người đàn ông trong thời gian chờ đợi bản hành quyết vì đã giết người bạn thân của mình khi biết được vợ của mình ngoại tình với người bạn thân ấy.

Chàng ca sĩ người Canada Terry Jacks, từng chơi với nhóm Beach Boys, đã ghi âm bài này nhưng sau đó quyết định không phát hành.

Nguyên nhân sự từ chối của Beach Boys là do cái chết của một người bạn thân của T. Jacks, làm cho bài hát càng thêm ý nghĩa đối với anh. Anh quyết định thu âm lại, viết lại mấy đoạn cuối và sắp xếp lại giai điệu... Nhưng bản thu âm này của Jacks lại để bám bụi ở nhà cả năm trời, cho đến khi một chú bé nghe được và nài nỉ Jacks chơi bài ấy cho vài người bạn cùng nghe. Bài hát được những thính giả nhỏ đón nhận rất nồng hậu, khiến cho Jacks tự tin ôm bản thu âm tới Goldfish Records xào lại một lần nữa rồi ra lò solo single đầu tiên trong cuộc đời, năm 1974. Nó là bản mà chúng ta đã được biết bấy lâu nay - Một người đàn ông nói lời giã biệt với những người yêu quí đã chia sẻ một cuộc đời hạnh phúc cùng ông - không hề dây dưa gì tới bản dịch tiếng Anh đầu tiên kia. Thật bất ngờ, hơn 285 000 bản copies đã bán hết veo chỉ trong vài tuần ở Canada. Còn ở Mỹ thì sao? - 3 triệu bản. Ghê gớm hơn, trên toàn thế giới, single này được vét tới 6 triệu bản.

Một thời gian ngắn sau khi bản thu âm của Jacks được phát hành, Jacques Brel quyết định chấm dứt sự nghiệp ngay trên đỉnh vinh quang. Các fans rất sửng sốt, nhưng ông không đưa ra bất cứ lý do nào. Cuối cùng sự thật đã rõ, sau 6 năm lặng lẽ chiến đấu với căn bệnh ung thư, ông đã chết 9/10/1978.

Jacks từ chối nhận khoản lợi nhuận kếch xù từ bản thu âm này, và đặt tên lại cho con thuyền sức mạnh của mình là "seasons in the sun".

Ngoài ra còn có các ban nhạc và nghệ sĩ khác cover lại ca khúc này trên nền sáng tạo của T.Jacks như ABBA, Kingston Trio, Nirvana, Westlife, Blink 182...

Westlife thì chắc ai cũng biết rồi. Còn bản của Nirvana thực sự có một số đoạn giật gân. Mãi đến năm 2004 bản của Nirvana mới phát hành khiến cho ca khúc này thêm được một lượng lớn fans hâm mộ.
